CHF strives to make life easier for cancer patients from various regions living on the footpaths outside Tata Hospital.
To assist these cancer warriors, CHF has initiated a care program that distributes seasonal fruits, including fresh watermelons, food packets, Amul buttermilk, water, and pre-loved clothing to help them cope with the heat.
People travel from across India to Tata Hospital in Parel, Mumbai, recognized as the leading facility for cancer treatment. Patients receive comprehensive care at affordable costs, with approximately 400-500 new admissions daily from rural areas. However, the nearby Dharamshala and ashrams often lack sufficient capacity to accommodate the influx of patients. As a result, many underprivileged individuals are compelled to sleep on the streets while undergoing painful treatments. It is disheartening to see children and the elderly with feeding tubes, urine bags, and bandages lying on dirty footpaths, eating near overflowing garbage bins while enduring the scorching heat.
On Saturday, May 7, 2022, CHF launched ‘Beat The Heat Campaign’ to assist these patients. As part of this initiative, we distribute food packets, beverages, and pre-loved clothing collected from friends and relatives throughout Mumbai. Each story we encounter is heartbreaking, such as young men who have left their jobs to accompany their parents for treatment. Women battling oral or ovarian cancer must leave their children behind to stay on the footpath with their husbands during treatment.
One day, upon arriving outside the hospital, we noticed a man suffering from mouth cancer who was vomiting blood. It was distressing to see him endure this alone. Our volunteers promptly alerted the hospital staff, who rushed him inside for urgent care.
As we distribute these food items, the gratitude expressed by those we serve is uplifting. We remain committed to this program outside Tata Cancer Hospital and strive to assist these individuals in every possible way.
